About Recreation Management

Learning Objectives

  1. Train our students in management skills associated with middle management line positions.
  2. Instill in our students a sense of ethical principles and professional responsibility.
  3. Prepare our students so that they may identify and access the most relevant research materials.
  4. Foster those skills necessary to seek out partnerships in the delivery of recreational
    services.
  5. Cultivate an attitude of lifelong professional participation.
  6. Implement effective instructional approaches including the use of media and technology.
  7. Apply formal and informal assessment strategies.

Curriculum

  • The major is designed to prepare recreation professionals in the organization and promotion of programs improving the quality of life for active and inactive people across the life span.
  • The major combines fitness, physical education, and business with recreation.
  • The major allows the flexibility to prepare for a wide variety of health/fitness careers including, but not limited to: YMCA ( camp directors, youth sports directors, program directors), community recreation, outdoor recreation, and campus recreation (through National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association).
  • The curriculum features a strong combination of learning and applications.
  • Students have access to excellent facilities, including a biomechanics laboratory, exercise physiology laboratory, wellness center, strength room, dance studio, swimming pool and walking track.
  • Students can complete the major and one or two associated minors within four years.
  • All health professions at Carroll University are housed in the Division of Natural and Health Sciences.

Internships

  • Placement for students includes internships with the YMCA, City of Waukesha Parks Recreation and Forestry Department and campus recreation.
  • Internship placement will be individually designed to best match the needs and goals of the student.

Special features

  • Faculty have diverse specialties in the field of recreation (campus, community and non-profit), including health promotion and wellness, biomechanics, exercise physiology, facility development and operation, group exercise instruction, and strength and conditioning.
  • There is an opportunity for collaboration with professionals and attendance at regional and national conferences.
  • Opportunities are available for professional preparation through work study experiences running campus fitness facilities, and university community recreation.
