Grant Information
Goal: To provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to engage in scholarly activities one-on-one with a faculty member during summer 2008. Students will receive a stipend of $3,000 plus an opportunity to receive funds for research supplies and/or toward travel to a meeting to present the project results. Faculty will receive a stipend of $1,500. Note that each faculty member can submit proposals with no more than two different students.
Application Process:
- Each student who is interested must identify a faculty member with whom to work.
- The student/faculty team should develop a project of interest to both.
- It is permissible for two students to submit one proposal as a team. The proposal should explain how such a group project is consistent with disciplinary norms as well as how each student's contribution is unique and is equivalent to one Pioneer Scholar project. If accepted, each student will receive a $3000 stipend. The faculty member will receive one stipend. Each student should complete an application.
- All application materials are to be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs (Voorhees 209) by Friday, Feb. 22, 2008 at 4 p.m. The student/faculty team should complete the application form and all other materials (student, faculty and joint responses – see grant application) and submit them electronically as one file (in MS Word) to Katie Cizauskas at kcizausk@cc.edu.
- The proposals will be evaluated, and notification to the student and faculty member will be made by Monday, March 3, 2008.
Expectations:
- Each student who is awarded a Pioneer Scholar stipend will participate in scholarly activities instead of employment during the summer.
- The majority of the scholarly activities must be completed during summer 2008.
- All student/faculty teams will be required to participate in group meetings in May 2008 and September 2008 (dates to be announced), at which plans and results of the scholarly activities will be shared and student learning assessed. In addition, group meetings between smaller numbers of teams will occur monthly between May and September.
- All student/faculty teams who receive funding are required to prepare a poster or oral presentation at Celebrate Carroll Day in spring 2009.
- The faculty member and student are expected to meet regularly over the summer to assess progress and modify the project as necessary.
- Students must keep a log documenting weekly activities, approximate research hours and descriptions of interactions with their faculty mentor.
