All full-time traditional freshmen are assigned an adviser in their major field as soon as they arrive on campus. This is your official adviser who will meet with you to select courses each semester. Your FYS instructor will hand out a copy of the Major/minor/adviser Form that you filled out at your orientation session. This form has your adviser’s name on it. This will be your official adviser from now on unless you request a change.
- What if I didn’t get a copy of that form?
If you did not get a copy of the Major/minor/adviser Form from your FYS instructor, this could mean that you did not fill out the form. If you confirmed late and came to the final orientation, you might have filled out a form there. If so, you will be getting it in the mail soon. If you came to an orientation session in July, perhaps you neglected to fill out and turn in your form. If so, get a form from your instructor, fill it out today and hand it in immediately at the registrar’s office so we can assign you.
Note: If you are not a traditional full-time freshman (you are part-time or are considered a non-traditional student for any reason) you need to contact your admission counselor.
- How do I contact my adviser?
Your adviser’s name and office location will be listed in the people finder on the Carroll Intranet – my.cc.edu. You can also contact the information desk in the campus center 262.547.1211.
- When should I meet with my adviser?
You should contact your adviser any time you have questions about your program or your academic progress. If you don’t have questions, you can wait until scheduling for next semester begins. By the beginning of November, you should locate your adviser’s office and sign up for an appointment. You must schedule an advising appointment in advance. Advisers will have sign-up sheets available outside their offices. Advisers are very busy during the scheduling period, so you won’t have much time to get to know your adviser then. It might be nice to stop by and introduce yourself earlier. Your adviser will have a copy of your midterm grades during your first two semesters. That might be a good time to meet your adviser.
- What does my adviser do for me?
Remember, you are responsible for your own academic progress. Your adviser will not choose your classes for you. It is your responsibility to read the catalog and become familiar with the major and general education requirements. Your adviser is the person who helps you solve problems when they arise. Don’t arrive at your November advising appointment without a list of courses you want to take and a tentative schedule. Your adviser will go over it with you and sign the necessary forms.
- What if I need to change my major or my adviser?
Go to the registrar’s office and pick up a new Major/minor/adviser Form. Fill it out with your new major and take it to the area chair or dean for that division. They will have to sign the form. You can change your major, minor or adviser at any time. The Walter Young Center can help you choose a major or explore various career options. To schedule an appointment, call 524.7335.
- I need a schedule change now! What do I do?
- Go to the registrar’s office and pick up a blue drop/add card.
- Go to the instructor of the class you want to add and see if there is space. If so, get the instructor’s signature.
- Go to the instructor of the class you want to drop and get your instructor’s signature.
- Go to your adviser and get your adviser’s signature.
- If you hope to add a class, you must take care of this before the deadline to add: Wednesday, September 12.
- If you just want to drop, you have until Nov. 1, but if you don’t turn in the card, you will receive a grade for that class! If you want to drop, be sure to take care of it before Nov 2. because you can’t count on getting your adviser’s signature at the last minute.
